Lansdowne Classic Series   lansdowneclassicseries -> eligilibility

Eligibility of Man and Machine

General
Competitors racing in this Series are enthusiasts seeking to support and uphold the objective of the series. This objective has guided the formulation of the machine requirements (set out below) and will govern the organisers' interpretation of those requirements. Recognising that it is not possible to frame eligibility rules' with absolute precision all decisions/views on matters of 'eligibility' taken by the organisers will be final and binding. That said, it is the hope of the organisers that participants in the Series will not wish to push the interpretation of this framework to the limit thus keeping need for intervention by the organisers to an absolute minimum (and enabling their main focus to be on developing and promoting the Series!)

Riders
The popularity of the series has resulted in a general increase in the quality of riders entering. This has meant the potential speed differentials between the front of the fields and the rear has made it necessary, with some regret, to limit the series entrants. Entries are restricted to those holding a minimum level of Clubman ACU Road Racing Licence (i.e. no orange jackets). This rule will be waived only in cases where potential entrants can provide evidence to the organiser that they have the competence to perform at the required level. This will usually be evidenced by a previous racing history.

Machine Requirements

  1. From a distance of 10 paces, machines must be of an overall appearance that accords with the period
  2. Engine parts must closely conform to a design & specification readily available from the manufacturer to private buyers up to the end of 1963. (In the case of Manx Nortons, this is to 31st December 1962 and by special exception 250cc/350cc 'long stroke' wet clutch Aermacchi's to 1964). Minor internal non-BHP boosting modifications to the engine are permitted if undertaken in the interests of reliability and/or the original spec. component is not readily available. All external castings must look original
  3. Pre 1963 specials (eg the McIntyre Matchless and works machines) must be of European origin and be substantially the original machine (i.e. not a replica). Proof of provenance is on the rider
  4. Replicas of 3. may (at the discretion of the organisers) be permitted to race if the original is not racing in the series and the bore & stroke does not infringe 1 1. below. This concession is with the particular intention of allowing machines to race of notable technical merit e.g. an Earles fork Manx Norton.
  5. No fairings (either fu11 or half) although flyscreens are permitted (if ACU legal).
  6. Pre '63 original fitment drum brakes only. On the front wheel there must be no more than 2 leading shoes on either side.
  7. No carbon fibre or titanium parts.
  8. The following departures are allowed in the interests of safety and pragmatism
  9. All bikes are subject to a handicapping system which adds or subtracts Championship points for particular features. Details of this can be found here.
  10. Bore & Stroke Dimensions
    Manx Norton500ccmax bore 86mmmin.stroke 85.8mm
    Manx Norton350ccmax bore 76mmmin.stroke 76.7mm
    Matchless G50500ccmax bore 90mmmin stroke 78mm
    AJS 7R350ccmax bore 75.5mmmin stroke 78mm

Weights
Following considerable debate, all machines racing during 2006 were weighed. This proved that the vast majority of bikes, both original and replicas, fell within minus 5% of the original manufacturer’s stated weight. To ensure that no unfair advantage is gained by the use of modern light weight materials in the future, all machines will be subject to spot checks to ensure they remain within minus 5 % of manufacturer’s stated weight.

Production (road based) engine racing machines
These are permitted at the organiser's sole discretion to add interest to the grid if raced in the period against GP thorough bred machines and are in the spirit of the Series. The two under mentioned production (road based) engine machines may also be able to race for points, if cleared in advance with the organisers:

Fuel
No special fuels are permitted - pump fuel and Avgas only with no additives.

Grid Formation
Grids for each 2009 meeting will be formed, as follows, according to the championship positions at the end of the previous meeting:

Protests
A rider wishing to protest an alleged infringement by another competitor must:

  1. Obtain the support of two other competitors racing in the same race
  2. Politely notify the competitor alleged to be in breach and seek to resolve the matter privately, in the presence of the other two competitors.
  3. Failing agreement, submit in writing to the organisers within 1 hour of b) taking place brief details of the protest (and any defence offered) signed by the protestor and the two other competitors.
  4. The organisers will invite all parties to submit written evidence in a prescribed form and time scale. Based on that evidence the organisers will adjudicate. Any protest upheld could (at the organisers discretion) ultimately result in the rider concerned being excluded from the Series and forfeiting all points and entry fees. The organisers decision is final and binding.

Dress Code
Black leathers are strongly encouraged
